Indien goes mobile

The cellphone is becoming the primary medium for Indians to connect to the Net.

Industry watchers, telecom operators and even handset makers estimate that going forward, first-time internet users will log on to the Web through their mobile handsets, rather than a PC.

Einige Statistiken:

  • 165.1 million subscribers to mobile services
  • 31.30 million users who access internet through their mobile handsets
  • 9.27 million internet subscribers using the PC
  • 65 million handsets sold in 2006, of which 35 million were Net-enabled
  • 5% of handsets sold in 2006 were smartphones

The propensity to use Net on the mobile is very high and the figures would be much higher if sufficient bandwidth (spectrum) is made available for high-end data services and more websites have mobile-friendly content.
